The construction in luxury retail
Late January 2024, I was invited to speak at the Luxury Retail Conference organized by Spazio Progeto in Maranello, home of Ferrari.
I was able to share my views on the challenges that I see in the construction area which covered 3 points :
First, the
impact that the luxury brand try to achieve with the opening of larger store,
is pushing the boundaries of architecture and engineering. Looking at the
incredible buildings used in cities like Tokyo, Seoul, LA, Dubai, … each
project are one off, complex projects requiring a different mindset than when
handling repetitive scaled deployment.
Technology can be of great support
to ensure continuity and team alignment with the latest plans development.
Platforms to encourage sharing and collaboration represent a competitive
advantage to gain speed and quality. Latest innovation seen, is a drawing robot
printing the plan on a site.
The last challenge that I see in construction is about sustainability. Many companies have created their own protocol that fit their needs. LVMH created Life 360, Swarovski (Gleam), Nespresso Positive boutique to name a few. It’s good to see interest in sustainability by retail brands, however, it’s a challenge to remain agile with supplier selection opportunities when each brands develop their own protocol. It takes time to grasp the details of each protocol, the way they are applicable in each project and how to benefit from a steering improvement instead of a lagging assessment rewarding blind choices.
