and retail lost one of the few artists who ever truly redefined what a storefront could be.

Kusama spent decades turning childhood hallucinations : endless dots, infinite mirrors, into one of the most recognizable visual languages in contemporary art, all while living, by choice, in a Tokyo psychiatric facility for over 40 years.

What made her singular for retail wasn't just the art, it was her willingness to let brands inhabit it completely. Louis Vuitton didn't just license a pattern; entire flagship windows, mannequins, and facades became Kusama installations, most famously wrapping the Champs-Élysées store in 2023.

Veuve Clicquot brought her dots onto champagne bottles and boutique activations, turning packaging into collectible art.

These weren't campaigns.

They were full retail environments built around one artist's obsession, proof that when a brand commits fully to an artistic vision instead of just borrowing from it, the store itself becomes the experience people travel for.

Rest in peace, Yayoi Kusama.

Few artists ever made retail feel like art.
